Smith River
About Benjamin Haugan
My name is Benjamin Haugan and I was reared in White Sulphur Springs, but now reside in the heart of the Little Belt Mountains, Neihart. I share all love and passion for fishing with my friends and family. I pursue respect for habitat with catch and release, as well as longevity of resources through conscious harvest. My reports will encompass all aspects of fishing including bait and lure, however I find most happiness with fly fishing.
Fishing report for the Smith River

Great Rainbow trout fishing, actually landed the biggest of my life. Working small Adam pattern on surface was effective, but had very little luck with Grasshopper and Stimulator patterns. Went under the surface with large bead head patterns, particularly green and brown, and had just a marvelous time. Accessed at Camp Baker and worked downstream.

Recent warm temperatures have lead to numerous amounts of fly and bug activity. Daytime I seemed to have luck running large streamers such as Woolly Buggers, black and brown. Later in the afternoon, little luck with grasshopper, so turned to smaller floating pattern that looked similar to a Woolly Bugger. Towards dark, I threw a Royal Wolf about size 14 with a few hits, but no snatches. Water clarity is much improved and good water flow and temperatures for this time of year. Primary catches were Rainbow Trout, with two small Brown Trout.
