Central Montana’s Russell Country Travel and Tourist Information

Picture of Charlie RussellCharlie Russell was many things: advocate of the Northern Plains Indians, consummate Westerner, outdoorsman, philosopher, historian, conservationist, writer, environmentalist, and not least, artist. Born in St. Louis, Russell dreamed of being a cowboy, living the exciting life of men on the range. Russell came to Montana in 1880 a few days after his 16th birthday. Learn more about the life of Charlie M. Russell.

Named for cowboy artist Charlie Russell, you’ll find wide-open spaces and gracious people everywhere you go. Central Montana’s Russell Country is a great place to experience Montana’s plains and mountains, recreational and cultural opportunities, pioneer and Indian life and rugged, Western past. A destination of its own, or stopping point between Glacier National Park to the north and Yellowstone National Park to the south, make us a part of your journey. You won’t be disappointed!

Central Montana bridges the gap between mountains and rolling prairies—with orb-stretching big sky in-between. Whether you paddle a canoe down the wild and scenic, history-steeped Missouri River, camp along its White Cliffs or watch the magical spring migration of snow geese flocking to the waters of Freezout Lake, this region is full of stunning diversions. And, don’t miss the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls.

The way of life depicted in Russell’s art is now gone, but the landscape remains much the same as it was in his time. The mountains and rivers of his paintings are still ready to explore and enjoy. Begin your journey by choosing activities, communities, or times of year to visit from the menu above.
